Interview: Venture

 Hey guys,

It's been a while since the last interview but don't worry, there will always be some talkative insights as interviews are probably my favourite posts to produce.

This time the band Venture from Wigan, UK sat down to answer a few questions I had.

The acoustic/ska punk five piece consists of:
Lucy Burrows (vocals)
Miles Burrows (guitar, vocals)
Mike Hargreaves (drums)
Josh Fairhurst (bass)
Thom Mutch (guitar)

Find out what Venture say about starting out as a band, line up changes, influences, sunglasses and English Language degrees.

house in the sand: To get things started - how did you guys find together?
Venture: We started out not even looking to start a band, Miles just wanted to record a song he'd written, and really wanted Lucy, his sister, to sing on it. The resulting positive vibe we go from people that listened to it made forming a band inevitable. The musicians that played on that recording ended up all being in the original line up. Mike, the drummer, had been in a band with Miles before - Skive. And the ukulele player, Danny, did work experience in the studio Skive had recorded in.

house in the sand: You've had a few line up changes to overcome, was it difficult to do so?
Venture: Not particularly, we've actually ended up with the ideal line up after all the swapping and changing. All 3 memebers of Skive, including Josh Fairhurst on bass and Lucy's boyfriend Thom on guitar. Between us all being related and/or mates for years it just made perfect sense for the 5 of us to be in this together. We haven't lost any songwriters in the changes so if anything it's been very positive.

house in the sand: You're sound is definitely unique. Are there any bands who influence you the most?
Venture: We started out really admiring bands like The King Blues, Merry Hell and Against Me! We're not the most overtly political band, but the DIY ethic has certainly carried over from those bands, and dragging in a number of influences to songs.

house in the sand: What was the funniest thing that happened to you during a gig?
Venture: Sweating so much that the sunglasses you insisted on wearing to an outdoor gig to look cool slide off your face!

house in the sand: Which one is your favourite song to play live?
Venture: 'Stay True' or our new single 'This One's For You'. Both always go down really well and you can bounce about to them.

house in the sand: On your soundcloud are a few covers. But is there one song we will never hear you play?
Venture: I don't think you would catch us doing any Lostprophets, that's for sure. That and 'You'll Never Walk Alone' or 'Blue Moon'.

house in the sand: The best moment as a band so far was?
Venture: This band means the world to us, just us 5 in a room together is a great moment in itself, we all have our laugh with our favourite people to be with. But the highlights are certainly our EP launch back in August 2013 and getting signed earlier this year.

house in the sand: What can we expect from Venture in the future?
Venture: A single before the end of the year with a music video. Then after that, more gigs, more tunes, hopefully a tour or two, who knows. Just absolute bangers forever.

house in the sand: Is there anything else you'd like the house in the sand readers to know?
Venture: Josh just got a first in his English Language degree and is telling the entire world. You heard it here first.

house in the sand: Please complete the following sentence: We are Venture and we...
Venture: ... see dead people.

Thanks to Venture for answering these questions and thanks to Chris from ScreamLite Records for setting this up.
